  9-1-1 > Public Education > Artwork Contests

Who types of contests do you offer?
We have sponsored book cover and calendar contests, and last year we used students’
artwork to develop 9-1-1 posters. We focused on 2nd through 6th grade students with the artistic abilities to develop artwork according to our theme. See pictures of contests.

What types of contest themes have you had in the past?
the theme for the 2004 contest, “Help Us Help You,” related to wireless implementation and issues. When cell phone users call 9-1-1 from their wireless unit, no address or location appears for the dispatcher, only a call back number. The caller must be able to identify their exact location in order to have emergency personnel respond to them. The posters were distributed to emergency personnel, schools, and officials as a 9-1-1 Public Awareness tool.

Why artwork contests?
Our goal is for students to help bring the important message of 9-1-1 to the entire population and also serve as positive role models for their peers by giving back to their community. We offered prizes to those students whose artwork appeared in the posters, as well as honorable mentions.
