What does 9-1-1 Public Education Emphasize?
Current public education emphasis is on 9-1-1 cell phone technology. Most people do not realize that when 9-1-1 is dialed from a cell phone, if any information pops up on the 9-1-1 dispatcher’s screen, it will simply be the cell phone number the call was placed from and the tower ID number of the closest cell tower. The 9-1-1 dispatcher has no way of knowing the location of the cell phone caller other than what information the caller is able to provide.
Funding for 9-1-1 caller location technology was recently obtained from the Public Safety Foundation of America and Department of Homeland Security. Implementation of the new system throughout the 14 county region is scheduled to begin in late 2005.
